The Last To Know
by Suseh
From his place ensconced within the comforts of the shadows, Aang couldn't believe what his eyes were seeing. Before him and completely unaware of his presence, Zuko had drawn Katara securely in his arms and had lowered his head, his lips sealed over her own.
For the young Avatar, this was not something he had expected. The relationship between the firebending prince and the waterbender had been mainly terse and each often going out of the way to avoid any contact with the other.
So when had things changed?
The only consideration in Aang's thoughts had been the day the two had come back from finding Katara's mother's killer. She had forgiven him since then and the tension between them had disperse into an easy friendship. But from there, Aang couldn't remember any thing further happening between the two. Certainly the two had been careful with their growing relationship and met secretly away from the camp.
"Aang?" Toph's gentle voice wafted in his direction and he turned to look at the blind earthbender.
"How long have you known?" He asked knowing that if any knew, it would be Toph. She might be blind but the earthbender always had a way of knowing what was going on around her.
For a moment, Toph didn't answer. She let the silence draw itself between them as she took a seat upon a nearby rock and looked forward. Her grey eyes unmoving.
"How long Toph," he demanded again. His eyes narrowing at the earthbender. The air around him shifting with his moods causing the breeze to become a bit stronger. "How long have they been seeing each other?"
"Since they returned," she answered finally. "At first the two tried to deny anything between them but I knew better. I knew the trip had changed them both."
Aang was silent and seemed to be contemplating her words for a moment. His hand rose and moved across his bald head as a sigh escaped his lips.
"Who knows?" He wanted to know.
"Suki, Sokka, and I," answered Toph honestly. "After the two stopped denying it, Katara told us one night the truth. You and Zuko had left the camp to continue your firebending and she took us to aside to tell us. She had been trying to find the right time to -"
"And when would that have been, Toph?" He hissed angrily cutting her off. The winds once more picking up around him violently. "After the war? When I finally confessed to her that I love her? Did you all think you could keep this safely from me until then?"
Toph flinched at his tone and wished more than anything that Zuko and Katara were here to placate Aang. She knew she did not have the right words either of the two would probably have to ease the situation. She could offer nothing at this point except to allow him to vent his anger.
"Why am I the last to know?" Aang asked falling to his knees and lowering his head in defeat.
Toph wasn't sure how to answer that at all. She pushed herself off the rock and moved to kneel down beside him, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and drawing him close against her.
"I don't know, Aang," she answered. "I don't know."
